Deira International School, Dubai
When students at Deira International School, Dubai, left for their summer holidays (mid- June), many were returning to their native countries or holiday destinations to escape the 40+ degree temperatures of the United Arab Emirates.
Apart from the excitement generated by the arrival of the long holidays, DIS students were also excited by the recent arrival of their latest ISBC orders. Students at this three year old school, with 900 students and 75 different nationalities, have the opportunity to choose from the ISBC brochures three times a year. Students and parents eagerly await the arrival of the new batch of orders, as do the School librarians and teachers at our three libraries – Primary, Secondary and IB, have all benefited from additions of ISBC books as we develop life-long learners through reading for pleasure.

ISBC was introduced to the school in the Spring of 2005. Initially, a lot of parents and pupils sought to know the relevance of the books to the recommended ones in school.
I was given the responsibility of educating and enlightening the parents, teachers and pupils on the importance of the new club. The colourful catalogue with brief and concise summaries of all the items eased my task. Thereafter, some pupils placed orders for books. The arrival of the first consignment of books elicited a more positive response from other pupils. It is now a thing of pride amongst the pupils to have a copy of a ISBC book.
We thank ISBC for giving the school free books. The free books have helped to increase the stock in the school library. So also, the books ordered by the pupils have broadened their horizons and acquainted them with stories from other parts of the world. ISBC has helped in waking up the reading culture among children of this generation.
